Imagine this: I just got an email from a SaaS tool I've used for three years: "We're updating our pricing structure." Translation: 300% price increase.
This wasn't the first time. It won't be the last.
As a professional engineer running a solo consultancy, I've watched the software landscape shift from "buy once, own forever" to "rent everything, own nothing." We've traded ownership for convenience, and the bills are coming due.
The Hidden Costs of Cloud Dependency
Financial Creep: That $10/month tool becomes $30, then $50, then "contact sales." Multiply by 10-15 tools.
Data Hostage Situations: Your business data lives in their database. Want to leave? Here's a CSV export missing half your information.
Feature Hostage Situations: The workflow you depend on gets "deprecated" in favor of their new AI-powered whatever.
Privacy Erosion: Your client data trains their models. Your usage patterns become their marketing insights.
Why Desktop Software Still Matters
I'm not anti-cloud. I use GitHub, email hosting, and deployment services. But for core business tools—invoicing, bookkeeping, contact management—I want ownership.
That's why I'm building the SoloStaff product family:
Bookkeeper
Drop receipts in a folder. AI extracts transaction data. Everything categorized for tax time. Runs locally, stores in SQLite. No monthly fees.
Invoice Application
Professional invoicing without vendor lock-in. Generate PDFs, track payments, export for accounting. Your data, your control.
Family Registry
Private contact management for extended families. Because not everything belongs in the cloud.
The Philosophy: Tools, Not Platforms
Good software should be like a hammer—you buy it once, it works reliably for decades, and it doesn't phone home.
The SaaS model works for platforms (social media, marketplaces, collaborative tools). But for personal productivity tools? It's extracted wealth without proportional value.
Building for the Long Term
Each SoloStaff application follows the same principles:
- Local-first: Your data lives on your computer
- Single purchase: Buy once, own forever (Some are even Free!)
- Cross-platform: Windows, Mac, Linux from one codebase
- Audit-friendly: Export to standard formats
- AI-enhanced: Automation without cloud dependency
What's Next
I'm building these tools because I need them. Every application gets "dogfooded" in my own business before release.
The Agentic Bookkeeper is processing my 2025 tax year expenses right now. The Invoice Application generated my last three client invoices. The Family Registry manages my extended family's contact information.
These aren't hobby projects—they're the infrastructure of my business.
